Movie Review: Dan Carter: A Perfect 10

I was not disappointed.
A Perfect 10 had it all. Comedy (mostly from Carter’s Dad, Neville who is a legend), heartbreak, honesty. I was entertained from start to finish. You get to see so much of Carter’s extraordinary rugby career covered off in just 90 minutes. From copping stick from his teammates for those famous Jockey billboards, to helping his young sons get ready for school, you get a genuine insight into Carter’s private life, which is normally very much behind closed doors.

QUICK TAP: DAN CARTER’S ROYAL CONNECTION

The storyline was easy to follow, and the movie flowed in and out of different moments seamlessly.
When Carter saw the film for the first time, he said he was overwhelmed by the people who had spoken about him and his career. A bearded and wiser looking Jonny Wilkinson, Kobe Steelers teammate Adam Ashley-Cooper, Steve Hansen, Beauden Barrett, Wayne Smith, Sir Graham Henry, Robbie Deans and Richie McCaw all feature prominently throughout.
McCaw and Carter share a special moment together when they fly over Lancaster Park. A ghost town, following the February 2011 earthquake.
Dan’s wife Honor, speaks open and honestly about her husband and the hardships he faced when his 2011 World Cup campaign was cut short.

And as earlier mentioned, Carter’s father, Neville was a star of the documentary. Throughout the film, people referred to Dan as being a humble bloke who has never forgotten his roots and his Southbridge upbringing. His parents are testament to his humility, and Neville Carter shares some pretty awesome stories about his son, whom he built goalposts for in his backyard when he was just an 8 year-old.

I spoke to Neville before we went into the premiere and he was very much looking forward to seeing how the flick turned out. He was particularly interested to see how his lawns would look on the big screen. Filming in Southbridge was done in February this year, whilst Canterbury was going through a drought. He said he spent hundreds of dollars on making sure his lawns were watered and in pristine condition for the feature film. I took a great interest in Neville’s lawn and I must admit, he’d done a great job.
The Luke Mellows directed film, showcases some of the very best of New Zealand. With the South Island looking as stunning as ever.
It’s five stars from me. Or you could say, A Perfect 10.
Dan Carter: A Perfect 10 hits cinemas on August 29.
