Recognising Yachting NZ qualified race officials

Recognising Yachting NZ qualified race officials

They are the unsung heroes of our sport, so it’s only appropriate we recognise and acknowledge the people who allow racing to take place.

Neither local club racing nor international regattas could occur without race officials, who volunteer their time and often their own money to ensure it is carried out in a safe, fair and sportsmanlike manner and that sailors have an enjoyable experience. Event organisers should be mindful of that, and the efforts of all volunteers, at their briefings and prizegivings.

We will be announcing changes to our race official training programmes over the next couple of months, which will allow us to reach more club members and make it easier for our entire sailing community to acquire this knowledge and skills. Keep an eye out for these updates.

At present, Yachting New Zealand have formal qualifications for two levels of race officials (race officers, judges, umpires):

Club level – capable of officiating at club racing and local and regional regattas
National level – capable of officiating at national/major events

These qualifications recognise that an individual has completed Yachting New Zealand’s training and has a certain level of practical experience in their field.

International race officials are appointed by World Sailing.

Yachting New Zealand maintain a national register of people with these qualifications, provide training for their ongoing development and a structured pathway for moving through these qualifications. We’re also currently working on a club and national pathway for measurers.

Below is a list of all the Yachting New Zealand and World Sailing qualified race officials in New Zealand. We thank all of these individuals for the time and effort they have put in to develop these skills for the benefit of the sport nationwide.

If you are doing these roles but are not officially certified, or you would like to upskill to do these race official roles, we encourage you to take advantage of Yachting New Zealand’s race official training schemes which are free for members of affiliated clubs.

Contact Danika at Yachting New Zealand if you are interested in undergoing specific race official training in your region over the coming season. Email [email protected]
